The Mini Bike & The Water
Faucet By Victor Scardella I remember when I was a kid, I had two younger brothers and two older brothers and I was right in the middle. I had no sisters and my older brother Steve was pretty much my hero as I was growing up. He was my hero for numerous reasons and here are a few of them as I recall. 1.) Being older than me, he got to drive and own vehicles before I could and his taste was "all guy" ! 2.) He always had the coolest vehicles that he drove and rode ! 3.) He always shared his fun adult toys with his younger brothers (including me) and we got to enjoy riding in and on whatever our older brother was driving. One time, I remember he (my older brother Steve my hero) had a motorized mini bike and he would give us younger kids rides around our yard and even around our neighborhood block too. One day, he was giving us rides in our back yard and he turned to me, since I was the oldest of the three younger children, and he asked me if I would like to try to take a solo trip on his mini bike ? Of course I jumped at the chance and said yes. So, he climbed off and I climbed on. He then gave me some simple instructions. He said "all you have to do to make it go is turn or twist the right side handle bar grip and it will go". So, I tried it once and turned the grip just a little bit. It wasn't enough to make the mini bike move at all. So, he said "turn it some more" ! So, I did, - I turned it as far as it would go ! Sure enough the mini bike took off at full speed and caught me off guard. I had difficulty steering it and it got out of control ! I ended up heading for the back of our house and I think he yelled, "Turn, Turn !" So, I tried to turn right before hitting the house. I only got it turned at the last second and side swiped the back of our house. As the mini bike and the left side of my body scraped along the back of our house, my shirt sleeve caught on the handle of the outside water faucet sticking out of the back of our house. As soon as my shirt sleeve caught the water faucet handle, it did two things. 1.) It stopped me and the mini bike from going any further. 2.) It turned on the water faucet and water was shooting everywhere ! The mini bike was leaning against the house and it was still running at maximum RPMs. I was pinned between the mini bike and the house with the water shooting everywhere and I was screaming at the top of my lungs because I was scared from the whole ordeal. My older brother Steve ran over to me and pulled the mini bike off of me and killed the engine. He then picked me up and turned off the water. He checked me over to see if I was hurt and all he found was that I was scraped up some but not seriously hurt. When he realized that I was not seriously hurt, he started laughing and said to me, "well, I didn't mean for you to turn the grip quite that far" !! ha ha ha ha ha. I was then taken into the house to get my scrapes fixed up and the ordeal was all over and done. It was a time I will never forget and enjoy sharing with you here. |
