Chapter Five:
I Remember Playing & Having Fun.
By Victor Scardella
I remember playing and having fun, exploring the woods, fields & swamp, and other aspects of my surroundings like the rail road tracks that led to Behan Road at the East end and Paul Road to the West.
And of course finding my way down the mile long
Fisher Road to Chili Ave.
Which led me to
Westgate Plaza where the grocery store, hardware store, post office and other fun places were.
Also, on
Chili Ave. was the elementary school that I attended and across the street was the "Carvel" ice cream stand, where we got lots of cool treats in the hot summer time.
When it was too hot to walk the mile long road for a cool treat, we had the convenience of having the cool treats come to us in the form of the "
Skippy" ice cream trucks driving down our streets.
They rang actual bells as they slowly cruised up one street and down the next.
All of us kids ran out to meet the truck when we heard the bells ringing to see what cool treats we could get for the little bit of change that we begged our parents for.
I can also remember such events as parties in our homes at different times, such as : birthdays and holidays.
We even had a block party once where we entertained the adults with music as we had formed a neighborhood band.
I was the manager had no real musical or vocal talent (being an awkward teenager with a changing voice and a tone deaf ear).
My brother Jamie was very talented on the keyboards and played the piano and organ.
Craig played the guitar and Keith played the drums.
Our youthful brains, lacking in real knowledge, came up with what we thought at the time was a "
cool" sounding name of : "Hot Flash" !
We turned out to be no more than a cool splash but, enjoyed the experience of it.
I can remember doing chores, both at home and for the neighbors for money.
We used the money that we earned and saved to have roller skating parties at the local roller rink just a short drive from our neighborhood.
As a young person, I can remember feeling somewhat invincible and brave as I flew around the rink on those small wheels.   And even when I fell, it didn't seem to hurt.   I just got back up and went around again.   I would not dare try that today !   Ha Ha !
